Interview Summary

Leora Kurtzer served as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Southwest China from April 2018 to February 2020 when she was evacuated because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She discusses teaching English at the university level and a western art history class, and friendships she made with fellow teachers and some students. She praises Peace Corps' evacuation efforts in China. She comments on her disappointment regarding the closing of the China program, which she sees as politically motivated, especially at a time when person-to-person contacts between people from the 2 countries could save the relationship. She also talks about her distanced social activism with other China Peace Corps volunteers since her return.
