Interview Summary
Ann Stock, former social secretary to President Clinton, begins the interview by detailing her professional background and how she came to work with Bess Abell in Vice President Walter Mondale's office. Stock then discusses the working relationship between Bess and Joan Mondale. Additionally, Stock describes her work in Vice President Mondale's office and her interactions with Bess in that capacity. Stock also characterizes Bess' personality and nature. Stock assesses what kind of an influence Bess had on First Lady Joan Mondale. Stock considers her and Bess' roles in the 1980 presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter. Stock also talks of Bess' work in planning White House events as social secretary. Stock addresses the difficulties in achieving a healthy work-life balance as a White House social secretary.
