Interview with Chester C. Eng, September 10, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Chester Eng served in Kosovo, 2016-2019, working in Education/Community Organization. He applied to Peace Corps because of his interests in international relations, public service and travel. He chose Kosovo because he remembered the conflict, which had touched him as a 9-year-old boy. His was the third group to serve in Kosovo, where he learned both of its official languages: Albanian and Serbian. Chester’s permanent site was Podujeva, a small city near the Serbian border. There he co-taught English at a public economics high school. He also conducted several community projects, including running a spelling bee and setting up weekend workshops for local youth — even assisting with the re-dedication of a memorial park by interpreting between English and Albanian! Chester calls Peace Corps “real work” and a transformative influence for both Americans and host-country nationals; tending to students’ success is a teacher’s dream.
