Interview with Sally Salisbury Zelonis, September 25, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Sally Salisbury Zelonis served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia from 1971 to 1972. Sally knew about the Peace Corps because her brother served in Liberia1. Her mother wanted her to go to Poland where the family had contacts through an exchange hosted on the family fruit farm. In training she met her future husband. They went to the same remote area and shared a house. Her house was open in the evenings for local children to come over to read and ask questions. After the teachers collected money from the students’ parents and Sally purchased items for the school the teachers decided to divide the balance among them. Because of this plan Sally ended her service early. A student who worked in her home came to America in 1990 after the Liberian war in 1989. He arrived on a tourist visa and Sally’s family is still supporting his effort to immigrate.
