Interview with Maureen Shanley, July 1, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Maureen Shanley served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia from 1977 to 1979. Maureen had been teaching for 10 years when she joined the Peace Corps. She initially applied after graduating from college, but was rejected because her major was not in demand. Maureen was assigned as an Educational Television Consultant to work with a section of the Colombian Ministry of Education in SENA- Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje. She worked on translation projects, assisted in the production of video programs, and acted as a consultant when they were constructing their first educational TV studio. There was not a lot of work at SENA because other South Americans were hired to work on the project. So, she started a second project at the Peace Corps Office. There she helped other volunteers to document their Peace Corps projects. Lastly, she served as the leader of a group of PCVs selected by their peers to address concerns voiced by Colombia PCVs.
