Interview with Joseph Keyerleber, September 29, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

As a senior at the University of Notre Dame, Keyerleber volunteered for the Peace Corps in 1960. He became a community development volunteer in Chile Group 1; his pre-service training included a 22-day cruise from New York to Valparaiso, Chile. After working first in Chillan, he requested reassignment to the remote village of Los Alamos in Arauco Province. He helped save fruit trees by procuring spraying machines and chemicals for farmers. He was instrumental in testing the sight and procuring glasses for boys in the school. A former Boy Scout, Keyerleber started a troop during his first assignment in Chillan. When he returned to Los Alamos in 2011, he found that his old friend, a community activist, owned a commercial radio station. The friend interviewed Keyerleber about their early projects on a broadcast that went out all over southern Chile. Peace Corps was an important experience for Keyerleber, teaching resilience and instilling confidence to navigate tough situations.
