Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Virginia Bradley served in Malaysia, state of Sabah, island of Borneo, 1965-1967, as an English education volunteer. Stateside training took place at Northern Illinois University. Her first year in Malaysia was spent teaching at Kinaba'an Government Primary School, in the Interior of North Borneo. She described her elementary school placement there as being “in the middle of rice in the middle of a rice field.” In her second year she worked at Kent College in Tuaran, a coastal town, teaching English to prospective teachers, where she set up a library. A highlight of Ginny’s service was an 8-day hike with students and teachers up Mt. Kinabalu. Ginny was able to travel the Circle Tour, and to visit Thailand, India and Iran on her way home. Ginny describes her upbringing as non-diverse. Peace Corps opened the world to her and now Ginny seeks out diversity, saying we are “one big village.”
