Interview with Alanna Hughes, February 4, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Alanna Hughes was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vicentillo, Dominican Republic, from 2008-2010 in community economic development. She joined Peace Corps after professors at Georgetown encouraged her to do so to get experience for her future career. She worked with CONACADO in the hills of eastern DR developing a chocolate tour for tourists and with the Asociación de Mujeres Esperanzas Unidas to promote their chocolate products. She helped students develop a business plan for a national business competition which they won! She lived simply in a two-room house with an outside latrine and often the villagers fixed meals for her. After her service, she continued to work in international development and helped set up an NGO in the DR and Haiti until going to grad school. She now works in economic development in the US. She loves the RPCV community and continues to have close relationships with fellow RPCVs and Dominicans back in the DR.Interview Accession
