Interview with Alynthia Penn, November 4, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

In 2019, Alynthia Penn served in the Eastern Caribbean with Peace Corps Response as a Literacy Support Specialist. While working with the Ministry of Education, her duties included teacher and curriculum development, and tutoring and diagnostic assessment in elementary and middle schools. Alynthia speaks of the beauty of the natural landscape, the delicious food, and the soothing nature of the sea--the Atlantic Ocean was almost always in sight. As an African American volunteer, one surprising delight was using currency featuring a Black man with an Afro for the first time in her life. Alynthia's service year was closed early due to a dispute over an allegation of withholding health information. After Global Reentry 2020, she is hopeful that Peace Corps will use RPCV feedback from NPCA Town Halls to consider volunteers’ social positions and modify its approach to mental health for improved wellbeing across Peace Corp’s diverse community.
