Interview with Peggy F. Schaeffer, July 18, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Peggy Schaeffer served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Yemen - from 1977 to 1979. Peggy joined the Peace Corps after working at her first job while her husband finished his degree. She joined her husband as a non-matrix spouse, but prior to arrival in Yemen her background as a librarian was desired at a co-educational school in Taiz. Peggy established a library for students in an English speaking school housed in the former American Embassy compound. She created a card catalog and eventually was able to offer a functioning library. She did not have a counterpart until the end of her service and regrets not working harder to get the school to assign one earlier. In her second year Peggy thought she was pregnant and Peace Corps sent her to Nairobi to see the nearest obstetrician. He could not confirm, but a neighbor in Taiz told her how local women confirmed pregnancies which proved to be accurate.
