Interview Summary

Dr. Joseph GarcĂ­a served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a health sanitation program in Paraguay from 1997-1999. He also was a Lead Regional Recruiter/National Diversity Liaison with the Dallas Regional Office (2000-2002), and Strategic Recruiter at the University of New Mexico (2004-2006). He discusses his role in building simple latrines/water systems and a municipal water system for the village in which he served. He provides extensive historical/political context for his time in Paraguay. Throughout, he talks about how his working-class and activist Chicanx background positively influenced his Peace Corps experience, attitudes of people of color towards Peace Corps, and other challenges. He discusses graduate research in Paraguay and other Latin American countries and the profound impact of Peace Corps on his career. He concludes with his perspective on creating a more diverse and more effective Peace Corps.
