Interview with William Sullivan, April 21, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
William Sullivan served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia, from 1963 to 1965, in the Rural Community Development program. Sullivan graduated from the University of Notre Dame and wanted to have a service experience. He considered the Navy, but had high blood pressure. Father Ted Hesburgh told the students about his experience with the Peace Corps in Chile so Sullivan applied. His training took place in New Mexico before going to his assignment in Pesca, Colombia where one of his main projects was building a school. His father’s Kiwanis group raised $1000 and the local families contributed adobe blocks. For local transportation, he had a horse. Sullivan returned to the U.S. and joined the family business, although he maintained an interest in international life and started an import company called Dos Manos.Interview Accession
