Interview with Jeffrey William Walsh, September 15, 2020

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Jeffrey "Jeff" Walsh served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South Africa from 2016 to 2018 as an English and Life Skills Teacher. He was previously a teacher, Army medic, and AmeriCorps Volunteer, all “helping professions”. Training was a total immersion experience conducted in Mpumalanga, where Jeff lived with a host family. He was the first PCV to be assigned to Maphoitsile, where he taught primary school children. As the result of a letter Jeff wrote to Bishop Desmond Tutu, his school received 500 Tutu Laptop Desks. Twenty-three months into his service, volunteers in Jeff’s region were evacuated due to safety concerns, and he completed the final months of his service at the Peace Corps office in Pretoria. The interview discusses his volunteer experiences before and after Peace Corps; training; work; using “Grass Roots Soccer” as a teaching tool; an article he wrote for World Vision Magazine; and views on Peace Corps service.
