Interview with Brent McNabb, August 19, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Brent McNabb served in Brazil, 1972-1975, in community development. He joined Peace Corps because he wanted to serve outside America. Brent’s 3-month training was in Salvador, Bahia, including two remote field stays. He worked two years with the Catholic diocese in Amargosa, Bahia, working with priests, nuns and lay workers, helping identify the needs of the poor, applying for funds to meet those needs and providing community members with the tools to do this for themselves. (Outhouse building, chicken raising, midwife courses, etc.) Brent’s mother, a chiropractor, came to visit and successfully treated the local medical doctor’s aunt. Because of this encounter, the doctor went on to become a chiropractor and she and Brent became lifelong friends. She ultimately brought chiropractic to Brazil and together they worked to establish the first chiropractic university program in Brazil. They continue to work together on chiropractic continuing education programs in Brazil.
