Interview Summary
Johnson describes some elements of the town of Midway, including stores and other establishments, and recreational areas. They discuss Saturdays as a day of recreation and leisure. They discuss the impact of World War II on daily life. Johnson describes how they got water, as well as the medical care for African Americans. They discuss their food habits and garden. Johnson describes her work, including working in an antiques store called Lafayette Galleries, at a store called W.H. Rowlands, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington in the children's ward, as well as redrying tobacco from November to March. They discuss social interaction with other Black people, with white people, and with coworkers. She describes some family history as well as the Midway Colored School and the high school in Versailles. She describes the recreation they participated in, including church activities, going to Lexington, some dance halls, and clubs. They discuss when they realized they were viewed as different. They discuss the new Midway school as well as how Black people are getting pushed out of Midway. Johnson discusses how the mail system and post office work in Midway.Interview Accession
