Interview Summary
Rachel Howard did service travel to countries in Latin America as a teenager. She studied Spanish, including a semester abroad in Ecuador. She graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in Spanish and Sociology. Her assignment in Ecuador was in Urban Public Health. She learned the Kichwa language and basic health education in training. Rachel was assigned to Pulucate in the Ecuadorian highlands – a different culture and climate. She worked in the pre-school, elementary and high school, a health clinic and the church providing presentations on health issues. Initially she lived with a family that introduced her to community leaders. At the health clinic, Rachel gave presentations to patients as they waited for their doctor’s appointment. She also worked with youth groups on life planning, sex education, finances, etc. With a women’s group she introduced gardening and cooking classes. Rachel developed relationships with families through their kids.Interview Accession
