Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Katelyn Haas-Conrad (Haas is her maiden name) served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone, from 2010 to 2012, in the Education sector. She served in the first group returning to Sierra Leone after the civil war. The entire training group was under 30 years old. After graduating from university, Katelyn left for Sierra Leone to become a science teacher. She taught classes in the all girls junior and secondary senior schools. At the time school fees for education past the junior level were paid by the students so the classes were smaller in the secondary school. Katelyn lived in a compound near the school in a dwelling with an indoor toilet, the children in the other houses were constant companions and helped care for her dog. She noted the strength of the community and is able to communicate with her friends in Sierra Leone through social media.
