Interview with Khloe Benton, August 28, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Khloe Benton served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gansu, China from August 2019 to February 2020 when the program was abruptly closed. She taught English at Lanzhou University. As an African American woman in a very traditional part of China, she constantly felt out of her comfort zone despite Peace Corps’ efforts to prepare her and other volunteers for the experience. Nevertheless, she made close friendships with other volunteers and feels that experience helped make her more resilient. She concludes by discussing how Peace Corps can do a better job recruiting people of color to join the Peace Corps.Interview Accession
