Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Luigi Zeccardo served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fiji, from 2014 through 2016, in the Community Health Empowerment Program. Luigi learned of Peace Corps while in college, through an anthropology professor who had served twice. Luigi applied after graduation. His parent’s were not in favor of the his decision, and he withdrew his application due to their influence. He applied again two years later, and was invited to serve in Fiji. His work in Fiji focused on combating diabetes and hypertension, which have high rates among the island communities. He was assigned initially to Nasau village on Koro Island. When a severe tropical storm hit his island, Luigi was evacuated to the capital city, Suva, where he completed his service working for the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The interview discusses Luigi’s work; revelations about Fijian culture; contrast between village and city life; sharing his experience through a blog; and impact of Peace Corps service on his life.
