Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Allison O’Donnell was a Health volunteer, Honduras, 2007-2009. Hers is a Peace Corps family—her grandfather was Country Director in South Korea (late Sixties) and her aunt served in Nepal. From the capital Tegucigalpa, Allison’s group went to Santa Lucia for 3 months of training. Allison had Spanish and health education instruction stateside, so she was prepared for her assignment working with Pure Water for the World and Rotary International installing sand water filters around Santa Barbara. A highlight for Allison was her additional participation in HIV prevention and reproductive health initiatives in schools and prisons.
Allison said Peace Corps helped her go into public health policy, her focus in her current HHS employment. Allison believes Peace Corps has made it easier to connect with people from other countries. Her advice to Peace Corps aspirants: be humble, listen and “laugh at yourself for thinking you can make a difference.”
