Interview Summary

This interview with Willard Burton, the Johnson County (Ky.) solid waste manager, and Lillian Wheeler, the Eastern Kentucky Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE) and special projects and programs coordinator of Johnson County (Ky.), begins with a discussion of their childhoods, touching on such topics as waste management and indoor plumbing. Next, the interview moves on to a discussion of the pair's work in solid waste management, which for both began in the 1980s. Wheeler talks about Johnson County (Ky.)?s program for tire disposal. She then talks about the problem of illegal dumping and the Eastern Kentucky Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE) grants that help to clean them up. Burton then discusses the problem of roadside litter, which he feels now surpasses illegal dumps. Included in the conversation is a detailed description of the county's efforts to curb roadside littering. The duo talk about septic system programs as well.
Wheeler and Burton talk about the collaborative clean up efforts in Johnson County (Ky.). Burton then talks in depth about the littering problem in the county. Wheeler then talks about the people who have contributed to these clean up efforts. Finally, Wheeler talks about educating young people about environmental causes. The two then talk about Hal Rogers, who supported environmental clean up in Kentucky.
