Interview Summary
Dr. Michael Doidge, a Contract Historian with the United States Federal Government, shares his experiences during the Vietnam War and his work as a historian. Doidge received his doctorate in American History through the University of Southern Mississippi. A former part-time instructor and adjunct lecturer with the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College, Doidge’s past research has focused on Veterans and mental health, institutional medical care in the Armed Forces, and he is an expert in Modern American Military History. Doidge was the creative director behind Vanguard of Valor, the Army’s first digitally interactive textbook. He is the Author of numerous Defense Department studies; Doidge specializes in Military Medical Policy and Joint Policy History and his articles have appeared in the Washington Post, the Encyclopedia of Military Science, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. The focus of this oral history interview will be to shed light on the experiences of a federal historian. From the perspectives of Dr. Doidge, the hope is to provide information on the experiences of working as a historian in the modern age. Specifically, the goal will be to gain a better understanding of how and why the United States Government records and preserves oral history testimony. In tandem with dozens of other interviews with Vietnam War era individuals, this oral history interview will be conducted and archived in accordance with West Chester University’s Vietnam War Oral History Project and with cooperation and guidance from the University of Kentucky’s Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History.Interview Accession
