Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Dan Baker served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia and as a Volunteer Leader in Timor-Leste between 1999 to 2003. Immediately prior to Peace Corps, Dan was a recent college graduate. As he completed college, he realized his dream of joining the Peace Corps. Dan was one of 26 members of his training cohort, Bolivia 20. His pre-service training in language, culture, and technical training were conducted in Spanish in the community of San Lorenzo, in the Valle Alto region about one hour outside of Cochabamba. His site assignment was in the city of El Alto surrounding communities, primarily working in a childcare center. Dan also engaged in secondary projects in in projects involving health and sanitation. Shortly after Dan completed a third year extension as a Volunteer Coordinator in the Chuquisaca Regional Office, he joined the team of Volunteers opening the new Peace Corps program in Timor-Leste. That year was followed by a many years of Peace Corps employment at the Washington, D.C. headquarters as well as in host country staff leadership positions.
