Interview with Christine Teen Ward, November 4, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Teen Ward served as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching elementary school English in Zambia from 2014-16. She joined the Peace Corps at 27 after becoming disillusioned with her job in business. She praises Peace Corps training, especially respectful cultural training, that helped prepare her for life in a remote rural village. Much of the interview is devoted to stories about life in Katebula village in Luapula province, her friendships with children, women and neighbors, and how much she learned to appreciate the slower pace of life in the village. She discusses teaching, her role in an afterschool leadership program, and other extracurricular activities. She comments on problems with English language instruction in Zambia. After returning to the US for family reasons, Teen now works in the non-profit sector in Zambia from where she continues to share the reality of Africa with Americans.
