Interview with Christopher W. Roesel, September 28, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Christopher Roesel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala from 1973-1975 in the School Gardens and Nutrition Program. He was accepted and assigned to a math teaching program in Liberia but delayed to be able to join a program to Guatemala with his wife. Of the 34 volunteers in his training cohort all but a few were married couples: men worked with school vegetable gardens; the women with nutritious meals for schools. His training was primarily in the city of Antigua. His site was about 2 ½ hours from Ciudad de Guatemala, near Lago Atitlan, a region where Spanish was a second language for most inhabitants. He worked with teachers and students in about 20 schools to develop school gardens whose produce would support school lunch programs. Chris also established a boy’s club that grew non-traditional vegetables, and did some English teaching. Chris' Peace Corps service became the starting point for a long career in international public health. He is the author of two books summarizing many of the lessons he learned from his experiences.
