Project: ACTION: Cancer In Kentucky - Faculty/Staff Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Dr. Lew Kelly, the retired director of the Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky, discusses the history of cancer care in the state of Kentucky. He talks about the development of cancer treatment in the 18th century by Ephraim McDowell, a doctor based in Danville, Kentucky, and how McDowell’s work inspired the creation of the Ephraim McDowell Foundation in central Kentucky. He talks about the foundation’s particular focus on bringing cancer treatment to populations in the Appalachian Region of Kentucky. Kelly then discusses the development of the Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky, the next evolution of the Ephraim McDowell Foundation. Kelly details the reasons for high rates of cancer in Kentucky, particularly in the Appalachian Region, and how successful cancer prevention would bring significant growth to the area, both culturally and economically.Interview Accession
