Interview with Jose Madera, June 28, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Jose Madera served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica, from 1978 to 1980. He worked in the education sector his first year, consulting with the juvenile justice system on how to improve their programs and help reduce recidivism. He and his wife Yolette, with whom he served, lived in Cartago the first year, the old colonial capital of Costa Rica. The second year he switched to the community development sector, working in a small, rural, agricultural community on a variety of projects of importance to the residents. Jose found the Peace Corps service experience to be a highlight of his life, and one that has enriched his roles as a parent, teacher and community member. He and his wife Yolette made lifelong friends from their service in Costa Rica and have exchanged visits over the years.Interview Accession
