Interview with Steven Williams, August 26, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Steven Williams learned self-motivation through his education in Montessori schools. He learned of Peace Corps through studies of conflict analysis and dispute resolution at Salisbury University. Williams had mentored at-risk youth of color. He accepted a posting in Botswana in the Youth Development/Life Skills project. He would have liked more language training. He was assigned to Moremaoto, a small village of 500. Williams worked with the school guidance counselor on life skills with students in the primary school. He also gave presentations at the clinic, library, and trade school. He learned the “psychology of sitting,” i.e. developing and growing relationships by sitting and listening to others. Williams feels he is now more of a global citizen than just an American. He is now more patient and aware of the world. Williams first learned of COVID-19 in December 2019. It seemed controlled in Wuhan. Peace Corps taught Volunteers how to adapt – evacuation is an example.Interview Accession
