Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Kate Schachter first served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana from August 2004 through February 2007 and then in Georgia from February 2016 through February 2017. Prior to Peace Corps, Kate had a career as an IT Manager and then a Customer Service Manager at two biotechnology firm and she had engaged in volunteer service with environmental organizations. After her children became adults, Kate’s long dream of joining Peace Corps was finally possible. Her pre-service training in language, culture, and technical training were conducted respectively in Techiman, Ghana. Her site assignment was in Brekumanso, Ghana as a Nursery Operator Advisor. Kate also engaged in secondary projects in health, education and youth development. Nine years after returning from Ghana, Kate elected to join Peace Corps Response for a one year assignment in the Republic of Georgia. She worked in Kutaisi in the Individual and Organizational Development sector as Fundraising and Networking Specialist. In 2017 Kate completed her service and in January 2018 began working as Peace Corps Strategic Recruiter at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . For her dedication and service as an older volunteer, Kate was nominated for Peace Corps’s 2021 Lillian Carter Award.
