Interview with Carole Mawson, July 7, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Carole Mawson served in Colombia, 1965-1967, working in healthcare and education. Carole’s interest in Peace Corps began with JFK’s 1960 speech at the University of Michigan. Carole trained for three months in Albuquerque. There were about 50 in the group. Carole still is in contact with women from her training group. After landing in Bogota, Carole went to her permanent site, Tunja. There she shared an apartment with another volunteer, worked in a hospital, and traveled in rural areas helping treat and educate patients. She and a volunteer also had a Spanish radio program. Later, she taught English at a local university. Carole counts as a success being able to persuade women to have their babies in hospital. Carole said Peace Corps changed her life: she met her husband while in service; she ended up teaching ESL at Stanford for 40 years; and service opened her eyes to the world.
