Interview with Kate Wallace, May 21, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Kate Wallace did graduate studies at Weelock College. She was working with the Massachusetts Audubon Society when her job was cut. A colleague suggested she consider the Peace Corps at 55 years of age. Her application process lasted 18 months because of medical considerations. Kate had taken Spanish at a community college and wanted to go to a Latin American country. She was offered an assignment in environmental education in the Dominican Republic. The environment sector in the D.R. was new and technical training was of little help. Language training was also difficult. Kate participated in a 55+ Volunteer support group. Kate was assigned to Moncion. She gave talks to teachers at outlying villages. However, she had connected to the bird community and been introduced to the Society of Caribbean Ornithology. She decided to change to Cabral to work with Grupo Tinglar giving talks to elementary schools and guiding exploration. She is known as “The bird lady” in the D.R.
