Interview Summary
Former Governor of Kentucky Wilson Wyatt begins the interview by detailing his friendship with Cooper. Wyatt describes Cooper's loyalty to his party, especially during election years. Cooper's political philosophy is examined. Wyatt talks of Cooper's personality. Wyatt reflects upon his 1962 Senate race against Thruston Morton. Wyatt also discusses the importance of Medicare and Medicaid as issues during the campaign. Wyatt recalls how his role as chairman of Americans for Democratic Action was used against him in the campaign. Wyatt offers his opinions of Thruston Morton, Earle Clements, and Happy Chandler. Additionally, Wyatt illustrates Cooper's good reputation throughout Kentucky. Wyatt talks of Lorraine Cooper and Cooper's divorce from his first wife. Cooper's political legacy is explored.
