Interview Summary

Mr. Thomas recalls the Thomas family history, his parents and their occupations, his educational background, and childhood games and chores. He remembers his father working on Sheriff Charley Land's farm, his father's voting record, the working conditions on Andrew Walter's farm, and details of farm life including cooking for other farm workers, diet and meal preparation, and using burlap bags as overshoes in the wintertime. He recounts the lynching of an African American youth convicted of rape, the effect of Martin Luther King on the African American community, conditions in Lexington after the civil rights movement, and his impression of the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
